Skin Sensations: harbourfront oasis in Ganges

February 23, 2017

Last night I went to a walking meditation workshop at Dragonfly Crystals in Rothesay,a few stone throws away from Quispzmsis in southern New Brunswick near Saint John where I am house sitting as I write this.

I am most content when I am among my sisters and brothers who do some alternative healing good in this world. I am in my temple when I visit metaphysical shops or healing centres.

Here is an article about one such ‘oasis’ on Salt Spring Island. I know Judith no longer runs it but we are Friends on Facebook nowadays, a phenomena that neither of us would have predicted in 2000 when I interviewed her and wrote this piece:

Skin Sensations: harbour front oasis in Ganges
by Tanya Lester

Judith Humphrys of Skin Sensations operates her day spa nestled right on the harbour front in Grace Point Square with a “feel good” kind of philosophy.

Outside, the patio is undergoing a facelift with an array of colourful flowers and a wooden trellis. This is where clients can relax and enjoy lunch, along with the sights and sounds of the harbour, if they come to Humphrys for a day of being treated well. This day is something she calls Paradise.

Inside, the walls are decorated with exquisite watercolours painted by
Humphrys’ mother, Elizabeth Grant. The wing where the treatment rooms are located was renovated last year.

To Humphrys, change is good. She and her staff are always upgrading and expanding their skills to offer a wider range of services to clients.

“It makes me feel good to make other people feel good,” said Humphrys. “If you feel better, then you look better.”

A salt glow and vichy shower is one of the treatments offered at Skin Sensations that definitely makes you feel better.

The first step is a nice rub with a combination of sea salt and essential
oils. Humphrys explains that this exfoliates the skin and re-hydrates it. Toxins are also released from the body and the circulation is stimulated.

Therapists get at all those places — knees, elbows, behind the ears — that are
seldom offered the tender loving care needed to smooth out all the rough edges.

The result is skin with such a polished smooth feel that it is truly
sensational to touch.

Without having to even move off the massage table, clients can experience a
vichy shower . The multi-headed shower is the best thing since the hot tub but, unlike the hot tub, it relaxes and then invigorates.

Imagine taking a shower while relaxing on your back. Tensions are washed away and, if you close your eyes, you can fantasize about being in a waterfall oasis — one you won’t want to leave unless you are anticipating a massage, which Humphrys recommends as a nice addition to the salt glow and vichy shower.

Another Skin Sensation option is taking a series of treatments. Something new is a micro-ionized algae body wrap to reduce cellulite on the thighs, buttocks, stomach and arms. Humphrys offers a free consultation which determines how many wrap sessions will be needed.

Wraps are offered in conjunction with a nutritional plan, exercise and home care products that complement the treatments.

Humphrys also prides herself on offering quality treatments at middle-of-the-line prices for every part of the body– from manicures to $10 footsore for seniors.

Gentlemen need not shy away from Skin Sensations. “We welcome them with open
arms,” said Humphrys. “Come see us, we’re great.”
